Dementia affects everyone in different ways. If your elderly loved one has been diagnosed with dementia and you are having a difficult time communicating with them, know that you are not alone. Visiting Angels Punta Gorda shares some tips on how you can have conversations with your loved one.
Reminiscing is always a great way to get a nice conversation flowing with those who have been diagnosed with dementia. Instead of asking simple yes or no questions, try asking questions that allow your elderly loved one to answer broadly. For example, sit down with your loved one and ask them questions about their childhood. Did they have any siblings that they would get into trouble with? Did they have a favorite activity?
While you are having a conversation with your loved one, you should also pay attention to their body language. If you notice that their eyes are glossy or they have started to yawn, you can ask them if they would like to take a nap. You can always try to pick up another conversation after they have had a nice rest.
