Creating a Safe Space in the Bathroom

White bathroom
It has been reported that six out of ten falls occur at home and that of those, 80% happen in the bathroom. When older adults have a fall, they can suffer from serious injuries such as a broken hip, severe bruising, and even death. Because bathrooms are typically made from water-resistant materials, much of the space becomes slippery - especially when wet. To help make your bathroom safer for you and your loved one, Visiting Angels Punta Gorda shares some advice.

The first thing Visiting Angels suggests is to maintain slip-resistant surfaces. If you have had slip-resistant strips for some time, it may be time to check them to ensure that they are not worn out. If your bathroom has a throw rug, Visiting Angels suggest to replace it with a skid-resistant bathroom mat.

Once you've finished inspecting for slip-resistant surfaces, make sure that there are adequate railings and grab bars. If you need to, you can have the installed in your bathroom. Just be sure to they are at an appropriate height where it will be easy to grab on to.

These are just a few tips Visiting Angels shares. You can read the full list by heading over to their latest article: https://www.visitingangels.com/puntagorda/creating-a-safe-space-in-the-bathroom-weekly-message_4290.
